Replace inadequate backup solution.
The capability to recover from an unforeseen event ranging from a server failure through to a fire or flood is important for every business. Whilst some things are easier to resolve on-the-fly, others need planning and investment to ensure disruption to day-to-day business operations is kept to an absolute minimum.
In 2014 Excel Dryer (UK) had decided to replace its backup system to ensure it was prepared for an unforeseen event, as MD Simeon Barnes explained. “Our existing system was not able to handle what we expected from it. It couldn’t get us back on line quickly enough and this meant that if we ever had a problem it would cause severe disruption to the business afterwards while we brought our IT systems back online.”
Rapid recovery from failure.
After looking at a number of options, Excel Dryer eventually chose the Datto ALTO solution offered to them by Zed One. “It met all our requirements,” said Simeon, “and it was competitively priced.” Datto ALTO goes beyond simple backup to provide true business continuity. Its instant hybrid virtualisation dramatically reduces downtime.
If a server fails for any reason, a virtual version of that server can be instantly created in the Datto Cloud and business applications will move to running on the virtual server in as little as six seconds. If the problem is more widespread, the entire network can be up and running in the Datto Cloud in a matter of minutes.
“Fortunately, we haven’t had to use the system for real yet,” explained Simeon. “But, we test it regularly and are fully confident that we will be back up-and-running very quickly if we ever have a real problem.”
Just because a backup operation has completed doesn’t necessarily mean that applications and data are recoverable, as many organisations discover to their cost. Network errors or data corruption can happen in any system, but Datto ALTO ensures the integrity of all backups and applications are ready to recover, every time with Screenshot Backup Verification.
By taking a “screenshot” of each completed boot process virtually, Datto ALTO tests the backup integrity and proactively identifies issues. A screenshot verification alert can then be sent to confirm the backup – this is unique to Datto.
Simeon concluded, “The service and advice we receive from Zed One is excellent. You can rely on them to do exactly what they say they are going to do, something that you cannot take for granted these days! They now look after all our IT from procurement and installation through support to ongoing advice.”
